ST. PAUL. Minn. – The No. 4 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (3-0-1) scored nine goals in a 9-2 rout of Bethel (0-4-0) to finish a weekend sweep in Minnesota. It was the biggest scoring output by UWSP since a 9-2 win over Lake Forest on Jan. 30, 2016.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) had three points on the night.
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, N.J.),
Austin Kelly (Toledo, Ohio),
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis.),
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich.),
Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas) and
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich.) each had two-point nights.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) got UWSP on the board just 2:41 into the game, an unassisted tally. Late in the first, BU tied the game at 1-1.
Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas) scored his first of the night 6:42 into the second period as UWSP took the lead just seconds after an impressive power play. Roo and Zech had assists on the goal.
Later in the second period, Roo assisted on a goal by McLean for his third point of the night. McElhenie also picked up an assist on the play.
Early in the third period, the offensive onslaught hit high gear.
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C.) tallied a shorthanded goal with assists from McLean and
Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill.) for a 4-1 lead.
At the 2:29 mark, Fredericks scored to make it 5-1 off an assist from Zech.
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, Okla.) scored shortly thereafter with
TJ Roo (Champlin, Minn.) getting the assist.
McElhenie netted a power-play goal at the 7:40 mark on Kelly's first assist of the night. The lead grew to 8-1 as
Ethan Strong (Kinmount, Ont.) scored midway through the third. Kelly again assisted with
B.J. Duffin (Red Deer, Alta.) also adding a helper.
The Royals got one back at 12:03. Miller capped the scoring at 17:14 with Fredericks and
Tristan Conrad (Lockport, Ill.) getting assists on the play.
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, Ont.) improved to 3-0-0 on the season with 13 saves for the Pointers. Bethel keeper Olof Djurberg made 43 saves.
The Pointers return home to face Saint Mary's on Friday (Nov. 9) at 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
