WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (3-6, 2-4) held No. 4 UW-Whitewater (9-0, 6-0) to seven points in the first quarter, but the Warhawks poured it on the final three quarters as the Pointers fell, 59-7.
Freshman quarterback
Max Herro (Dousman, Wis./Kettle Moraine) completed 13 of 25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. His primary target,
Christian Almonte (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), caught five passes, including the touchdown.
Senior
Ryan Strick (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) continued his dominance on defense with a team-high 10 tackles.
OJ James (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) made his fourth interception of the year for the Pointers' defense.
The Warhawks opened the scoring on a nine-play, 60-yard drive on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead.
Herro drove the Pointers into UWW territory on the ensuing drive. He completed three passes on the 11-play drive, but a sack on third down forced a punt. The UWSP defense held UWW to a three-and-out to get the ball back.
Herro completed a pair of passes as the Pointers again gained into UWW territory to end the first quarter. On the first play of the second, another sack doomed the drive.
The Warhawks took over and scored touchdowns on each of UWW's next two possessions. A field goal on the third possession gave UWW a 24-0 lead at the half.
James picked off a pass on the third play of the second half and returned it to the Warhawks' 25 yard line. Herro hit Almonte on the next play to get UWSP on the board.
The Warhawks found the end zone on the next five drives to open a 59-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
UWSP made one last gasp at getting on the board. Herro completed three passes and ran for 21 yards, but the drive stalled at the UWW 14 after a fourth-and-one attempt was stopped.
The Pointers close out the season next Saturday (Nov. 10) at UW-River Falls. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
