ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (2-2) saw No. 4 St. Thomas (3-0) pull away for a 70-49 win in the Tommies' home opener on Sunday.
Junior
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) led UWSP with 14 points, the lone Pointer in double figures in the game. Sophomore
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) led the Pointers with six rebounds. Fellow sophomore
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) topped UWSP with three assists.
Cerrato nailed back-to-back threes to give UWSP a 6-4 lead early in the first quarter. Freshman
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) had four points as UWSP was down just one, 12-11, at the end of the first.
Baehman scored back-to-back layups in the second quarter, but St. Thomas hit on nine of the next 10 possessions to open a 35-21 lead. A late three put the Tommies up 38-21 after out-scoring UWSP 26-10 in the second quarter.
Senior
Olivia Pawlak (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) opened the second half with a basket in the opening minute. Schmidt and Cerrato added three points each, but UST kept up the scoring with 11 made baskets in the third to put UWSP behind 59-37 heading to the fourth.
Freshmen
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) and
Erin Nyhus (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) each nailed a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
The Pointers return home to face Illinois Wesleyan on Monday, Dec. 3. Tip-off in Berg Gym is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
