UWSP Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match in Regular Season Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (17-15) got a double-double from junior April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert), but visiting Carthage (20-8) took a four-set win from the Pointers.

Gehl recorded 23 kills and 11 digs for the Pointers for her 23rd double-double of the season.  Both junior Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) and freshman Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) recorded seven kills in the match with Lawson adding two blocks.

Freshman setter Ciara Gilbertson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) finished the match with 36 assists and fellow freshman Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) had 11 digs.

The Pointers fell into a 7-3 hole to start the first set and twice got back within a point behind kills from Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer), Gehl, and Lawson and a service ace from Gilbertson. Down 19-14, UWSP rattled off a 6-2 run to pull within one at 21-20. The Lady Reds finished the set, scoring four of the last six points.

Again, UWSP began the second set down 7-4, but three kills by April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) led to a 7-0 run to put them up 11-7. The Pointers used a 6-1 run to propel them to an 18-10 advantage with three kills from Lawson and two kills from Jamie Schmitz (Cashton, Wis./Cashton). A kill by Lawson closed out the second set to tie up the match.

The Lady Reds were in control of the third set the entire game, five times scoring three points in a row. April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) finished the set with nine of the Pointers' 13 kills.

Gehl, Emme and Schmitz combined for five kills early in the fourth set, but the Lady Red moved ahead 8-6.  Carthage capitalized on a 12-4 run to take a 20-10 lead. The deficit was too much for the Pointers to overcome and the Lady Reds sealed the fourth set and the match.

The Pointers head to UW-Stout on Tuesday (Oct. 30) at 7:00 p.m. for the first round of the WIAC Tournament.
