MENOMONIE, Wis. – Junior
Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) registered his second double-double of the year as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (8-5, 2-0) prevailed by a 68-65 score at UW-Stout (6-7, 0-2) on Saturday.
Tauber scored 11 points and snagged 12 rebounds for the Pointers. He added three blocks and had three assists.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) led UWSP in scoring with 14 points. He was 4-of-9 from three-point range with four boards, two assists and a steal.
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) scored 12 points, a career-high. He had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Dodge nailed a three just seconds into the game, but the host Blue Devils reeled off 11-straight points over the next three minutes. Another Dodge three, his third of the half, pulled the Pointers even at 20-20 with 10:30 remaining.
After an O'Heron bucket gave UWSP the lead, UW-Stout posted six-consecutive points until a
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) three ended the run. Later in the half,
Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) hit from behind the arc and UWSP led 32-30 at the half.
Fredrickson hit another three in the opening minute of the second half and both teams went scoreless over the next three minutes.
Koko Songolo (Madison, Wis./Memorial) snapped the dry spell for UWSP to push the lead back to five. A
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) bucket accounted for the Pointers points in an 8-2 run by the Blue Devils to make it a 45-44 game with 9:03 to go.
O'Heron and
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) combined for six-straight points at UWSP broke a 52-52 tie. The Pointers made all 10 free throws over the final 1:25 to hold off the Blue Devils.
UWSP returns home to face UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Jan. 10) at Quandt Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
