KENOSHA, Wis. – Host Carthage (7-3) scored in the 89th minute to send the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (6-3) to a 1-0 road loss on Wednesday.
Freshman Francesca Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Thomas More) tested the Carthage goalkeeper four times in the opening half to no avail. Her first shot came in the second minute of the match as the Pointers out-shot the Lady Reds, 10-6, in the first 45.
The pitch tilted in favor of the home side in the second half. Carthage earned three early corner kicks and UWSP senior Sarah Peplinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) turned away three shots to keep the match knotted at 0-0.
Hamilton again had a chance to put the Pointers in front with her fifth shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the Lady Reds keeper made the stop.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 89th minute as the home team found the back of the net for the lone goal of the match. Carthage out-shot UWSP 11-3 in the second half.
The Pointers now travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Sept. 30) to open up WIAC play. UWSP and UWL kick off at 1:00 p.m.
