Pair of Sweeps Complete Undefeated Week for UWSP Volleyball

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 25 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (13-2) had little trouble in a pair of sweeps on Saturday to complete the UW-River Falls Invitational with four wins to complete a 6-0 week.  UWSP got past St. Olaf (8-5) in straight sets in the morning match and cruised past Finlandia (3-11) in three sets while limiting the Lions to fewer than 10 points in two of the set wins.

Sophomore April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) led the UWSP attack with double-figure kills in both matches on Saturday.  She topped the Pointers with 14 kills against the Oles and followed up with 10 more against the Lions.

Senior Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) recorded 29 digs against St. Olaf in the opener.  She led the team with 13 against Finlandia in the nightcap.

Sophomore Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had 27 assists to lead UWSP in the first match.  Freshman Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had 20 assists in the win over Finlandia.

UWSP 3, St. Olaf 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-20)
The Pointers came out of the gates firing at a .394 clip in the opening set, a win by a 10-point margin.

Despite a cooler hitting percentage (.234) in the second set, the Pointers prevailed with a seven-point win after holding St. Olaf to just .122 hitting.

In the third set, UWSP again hit over .300 at .361, edging the Oles by five points for the sweep.

UWSP 3, Finlandia 0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-7)
UWSP opened the final match of the tournament with a .400 hitting percentage while holding FU to a .000 average.  Again, the Pointers hitting percentage dipped in the second set, but the .219 swing percentage was more than enough to take the set by nine points.

In the third set, the Pointers hit at a .500 clip to steamroll the Lions with the largest set victory of the season.

The Pointers head to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Sept. 20) to open conference play in what is sure to be a top-25 matchup.
