Pointers’ Offensive Explodes in Sweep at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (21-17) racked up 27 hits in a final tune-up for this weekend's WIAC Tournament as the Pointers swept Marian (11-29) to conclude the regular season.  The Pointers rolled to a 13-1 win in eight innings and took game two by a 10-1 score to complete the sweep.
 
Seven different Pointers collected multiple hits on the day.  Eleven different UWSP batters recorded a hit over the doubleheader.
 
William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) led the Pointers with five runs batted in.  He also scored four runs, two in each game. 
 
Senior Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) racked up five hits for UWSP.  He scored a run and drove in a run in each game. 
 
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) continued his hot hitting, adding a pair of hits in each game.  He had two RBI and scored a run.  Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) added three RBI and scored in each game.  Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) scored four runs and had three hits.
 
 Game 1 – UWSP 13, Marian 1 (8 inn.)
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) began the game by drawing a walk and moved to second on a Sabres' error.  Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Stanicek singled to right to drive in two runs and give UWSP the early lead.
 
Thomka singled with one down in the second.  Weston Nelson (Sheboygan, Wis./North) drew a walk and Gerber was hit with a pitch to load the bases for the second-straight frame.  Iloncaie doubled to left to clear the bases and put UWSP ahead 5-0.
 
In the third, Popham doubled to start the inning.  A single by Rose put runners at the corners.  Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) put down a bunt to drive in a run and move Rose to second.  Two batters later, Nelson doubled to up the advantage to 7-0.
 
Iloncaie doubled to begin the fourth and moved to third on a balk.  Stanicek drove in his fourth run of the game with a groundout to the right side.
 
Three hits by Marian in the bottom of the seventh turned into the first run of the game for the home team.
 
Back-to-back walks to Thomka and Nelson sparked a big inning for the Pointers.  Gerber doubled to drive in a run.  Iloncaie drove in another with a sac fly.  Mrozinski and Stanicek were each hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Popham hit a sac fly, Rose singled and Duddleston singled as each drove in a run.
 
Nathan Mulzer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) started for UWSP and threw 3.0 hitless innings with five strikeouts.  Heinrich Walder (Rosholt, Wis./Rosholt) tossed 4.0 frames with two strikeouts to earn the win.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 10, Marian 1
A Marian error with one out in the first opened the door for UWSP to jump ahead.  Mrozinski doubled to plate the first run.  Stanicek singled to put runners at the corners.  He was then picked off, but stayed in the run down long enough for Mrozinski to score.
 
Rose began the second with a single and stole second base.  Duddleston moved him to third on a sac bunt and Rose scored as Thomka reached on a fielder's choice.  After a walk to Nelson, UWSP tacked on another run on another Marian error.
 
The Sabres sandwiched a walk with base hits in the bottom of the third to score their first run of the game.
 
UWSP got back to work in the fourth.  Thomka reached on a bunt single and stole second.  Gerber drove him home and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Iloncaie added on a run with a sac fly.  Following singles by Mrozinski and Stanicek, Popham singled to score another run and put the Pointers up 7-1.
 
In the sixth, a one out error sparked another UWSP rally.  Mrozinski was hit by a pitch.  Then with two outs, Ben Faga (La Crosse, Wis./Central) hit a pinch-hit single to drive in a run.  Rose followed with an RBI single as well to up the lead to 9-1.
 
Nolan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) picked up his first career hit to lead off the seventh.  Later in the inning, Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) drove in a run on a single to right to round out the 10-1 win. 
 
Tristan Brewer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) earned the victory with 4.0 innings in his first career start.  He struck out three and scattered a pair of hits.  Mack Blashka (Neenah, Wis./St. Mary Catholic) struck out two in 2.0 innings of relief and Beau Zeihen (Portage, Wis./Portage) struck out one in a perfect inning.
 
The Pointers head to Whitewater as the three-seed in the WIAC Tournament.  UWSP will face UW-La Crosse in the opening game at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.  Full WIAC Tournament schedule and information can be found at WIACSports.com.
