Softball Splits Season Finale with Extra-Inning Win

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Sophomore Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning to give the UW-Stevens Point softball team a game one win, the 100th of head coach Ashley Steltenpohl's career.  The Pointers (12-24) won game one, 3-0, in 10 innings, but dropped the season finale to Wisconsin Lutheran (13-25) by a 6-4 final.

Johnson had four hits on the day and was one of seven UWSP hitters with multiple hits over the twin bill.  Johnson scored a run in each game and had a RBI in game two.

Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) had three hits and drove in a pair.  Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) added two hits, scored a run and drove in another in game one.

Game 1 – UWSP 3 WLC 0 (10 inn.)
Johnson and Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) were each hit with a pitch to begin the game.  Despite the two early runners aboard, UWSP was unable to produce a run.

Johnson began the third with a single and moved to second on a passed ball.  Cooper followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but again the UWSP threat was halted without a run.

Melanie Miller (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) singled with two down in the fourth.  Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, WI/Rapid River) and Johnson also added base hits, but WLC kept the Pointers off the board.

The game reached the 10th inning without either team scoring.  Johnson doubled to begin the UWSP 10th.  She moved to third on a single by Cooper.  Two batters later, Uhlenbrauck singled to break the scoreless tie.  Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) and Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.I. Case) added RBI singles as the Pointer took a 3-0 lead.

Freshman pitch Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th to finish the complete game shutout, her second in less than a week.  Cohen struck out four and scattered five hits in the win.

Game 2 – UWSP 4, WLC 6
The Warriors turned two hits and a walk into a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, a one-out single and a walk led up to a three-run home run for WLC.  Later in the inning, the Warriors added two more tallies for a 6-0 lead.

Freshman Natalie Yahn (Wauwautosa, Wis./East) led off the fifth with her first career hit.  She moved to second on a passed ball, but remained there as the frame closed.

Mix began the Pointers' seventh with a hit.  Kitzing followed with a single and two batters later, Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) added a hit to load the bases.  Kanyuh drove in a run and Johnson doubled to plate another.  After Cooper was hit by a pitch for the third time on the day, Allen singled to left to score two more.  Uhlenbrauck singled to reload the bases, but after a pitching change, WLC induced a fly out to end the game.

UWSP ends the season with 12 victories, three in conference play.  Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) led the Pointers with a .406 average and 27 RBI.  Allen led the team with six home runs and drove in 24 on the year.
