MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (8-16, 1-5) suffered a pair of losses in conference play on Sunday at UW-Stout (13-11, 2-0). The Pointers dropped game one, 5-1, and lost game two by a 6-3 score.
Junior
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) hit safely in each game to extend her hitting streak to 11 games. She drove in two runs in game two and scored a run.
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) went 3-for-3 in game one and collected four hits on the day.
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) added three hits and drove in a run on each game.
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) scored a run in each game and racked up four hits.
Game 1 – UWSP 1, Stout 5
The Blue Devils got a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to set the tone for the day.
Cooper and Allen each drew two-out walks in the third inning.
Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) reached on a UW-Stout error to load the bases. Uhlenbrauck then singled to left, but the rally was halted with UWSP scoring just one run.
Three hits and a walk allowed the Blue Devils to push home two more runs in the fifth inning.
Allen singled in the seventh inning and Jacobson followed with a double, but both runners remained in scoring position as the game ended.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Stout 6
UW-Stout broke through first in game two as well. In the bottom of the second a pair of two-RBI, two-out hits put the home side in front 4-0.
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) hit a one-out single in the third as the Pointers tried to battle back. A double by Cooper followed by a two-run double from Allen cut the deficit in half. Two batters later, Uhlenbrauck singled up the middle to pull UWSP within one.
The Blue Devils tacked on solo tallies in the fourth and the sixth to complete the sweep.
The Pointers head to Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday for a make-up doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. The UWSP home opener is slated for Friday (April 14) at 2:00 p.m. with a twin bill versus UW-Whitewater.
