Seven-Run Inning Powers UWSP Past UWO in Home Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (10-22, 2-10) tied a season-high with seven runs in the fifth inning of game two to knock off UW-Oshkosh (25-9, 5-5) for the first time in 11 years.  UWSP rallied for a 9-6 win in game two after a 6-1 loss in the opening game.  The win in game two snaps a 22-game losing streak to the Titans and is the first win by UWSP since April 2, 2006.

Sophomore Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) picked up two hits in each game.  Her two-RBI double in the pivotal fifth inning drove in the eventual game-winner.  She had four RBI on the day and scored an insurance run in the win.

Senior Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union) had three hits in her final home games.  She scored three runs on the day.

Juniors Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) and Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) and sophomore Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) all contributed three hits on the day.  Cooper scored twice and drove home two.  Uhlenbrauck scored a run in the fifth-inning rally.

Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWO 6
The Pointers got a first-inning double from Cooper and Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) singled to begin the second, but UWSP could not get a run across in either frame.

The Titans turned three hits in the top of the third into two runs to take the lead.  In the bottom of the inning, Johnson singled and Cooper was hit by a pitch, but the Pointers couldn't push home a run.

UW-Oshkosh added three runs in the fifth, all unearned as a two-out miscue extended the inning.

Uhlenbrauck singled in the fourth and Johnson singled in the fifth as UWSP continued to put runners on base.

Finally, in the seventh, the Pointers broke through.  Semler doubled with one down.  An Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, WI/Rapid River) single put runners on the corners.  Johnson followed with a sac fly to center as UWSP avoided the shutout.

Game 2 – UWSP 9, UWO 6
A one-out home run initiated a three-run inning for the Titans to open game two.
Down 3-0, Cooper was hit by a pitch two batters into the UWSP first.  She moved to third on an Allen double.  Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) singled to right as the Pointers got one back.

Semler singled to begin the second.  She moved all the way to third on a sac bunt by Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.I. Case) and a productive groundout by Alexis Walters (Waterloo, Wis./Waterloo).  Johnson followed with a single to pull UWSP within 3-2.

Three hits, including another home run, scored three runs for the Titans to put the Pointers down, 6-2, in the third.

UWSP got singles from Allen and Uhlenbrauck in the bottom of the third, but were unable to produce a run in the frame.

In the fifth, Cooper singled to begin the rally.  Allen singled and a throwing error on a fielder's choice allowed the first run to cross the plate.  Uhlenbrauck drove a single up the middle to put runners at the corners.  Mix followed with a sac fly.  Semler singles and Kitzing walked to load the bases.  Pinch hitter Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) was hit by a pitch to pull the Pointers within one.  Johnson doubled to left-center to put the Pointers ahead.  Cooper then singled for the second time in the inning to drive home two more.

Relief pitcher Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) pitched the final 4.2 to earn the win.  She scattered three hits and struck out her fifth of the day.

UWSP will head to Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday to make-up a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.  The Pointers wrap up the regular season on Saturday at UW-La Crosse with first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m.
