Men's Hockey Defeats UW-Stout 7-4; Clinch Share of WIAC Regular Season Title

MENOMONIE,Wis.- The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team clinched a share of the WIAC regular season title with a 7-4 win at UW-Stout on Friday night.  Senior forward Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) tallied a pair of goals, to help guide the fourth-ranked Pointers to the victory at Fanetti Community Center.

With 1:29 remaining in regulation, Barber tallied an empty net goal to seal the UW-Stevens Point (17-4-3, 6-1-0 WIAC) victory over UW-Stout (10-12-2, 2-5-0 WIAC).

Senior forward Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) got the Pointers off to a fast start, scoring just 36 seconds into the opening period off an assist by Joey Haydock (Junction City, WI) to gain an early 1-0 lead.

At the 11:54 mark of the opening frame, Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, MI) scored his fifth goal of the season off assists by Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) and Barber to put UWSP up two entering the second period.

Gavin Smith scored for UW-Stout 17 seconds into the middle period to cut into the UWSP lead.

Just 2:05 later Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa ) took back the Pointers two-goal lead, scoring off assists by Davis and Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston).

Midway through the second period, Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON) and Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ) scored back-to-back goals 29 seconds apart to put the Pointers up 5-1 entering the final period.

UW-Stout's Riley Colvard scored 2:37 into the final period off an assist by Shayne McLaughlin, cutting into UWSP's lead.

At the 5:15 mark of the third period, Davis tallied his third assist, setting up Barber, who tallied his first goal of the night to put UWSP up 6-2 over the Blue Devils.

In the span of 4:50, Colvard and Justin Moody tallied goals to pull within striking distance, before Barber put the game out of reach.

UWSP out-shot UW-Stout, 34-29. Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 25 saves for the Pointers, while Spencer Viele and Tommi Alghren combined for 27 for UW-Stout.

The Pointers will wrap up the regular season traveling to UW-Eau Claire tomorrow evening where a UWSP win or tie give the Pointers the outright title. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hobbs Arena.
