Women’s Basketball Rolls to Season-Opening Victory

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) scored the first five points of the game and never looked back in a 67-35 win over visiting Alverno (0-1) in Quandt Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.  UWSP head coach Shirley Egner improves to 23-6 in season-openers with the Pointers.

Sophomroe Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) led all players with 13 points.  Freshman Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) was 5-for-5 from the field and poured in 10 points in her collegiate debut.

Senior Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) led the Pointers with eight rebounds.  She added six points and three assists.  Freshman Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) pulled down six boards, a team-high five on the offensive glass.

Seniors Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) and Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) accounted for UWSP's first five points of the game for a 5-0 lead.  The Pointers' three seniors scored the first 13 points of the season for UWSP for a 13-2 advantage.  Leiterman and Schmidt each scored their first collegiate points as the Pointers ended the first quarter up 27-9.

Olivia Pawlak (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) scored a bucket to snap a five-plus minute offensive drought for the Pointers to begin the second quarter.  That basket sparked an 8-2 run to end the half with the Pointers ahead 35-17 at the break.

Midway through the third quarter, freshman Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) recorded her college points as the lead grew back to 20.  Cerrato scored three points from the charity stripe down the stretch, equaling Alverno's point total over the final four minute of the period.

Freshmen Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) and Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored their first baskets as a Pointer in the fourth quarter as the Pointers pulled away for the 32-point win.

UWSP heads to Dubuque, Iowa for the Fidelity Bank & Trust Tip-Off Classic and will face Simpson College at 6:00 p.m. Friday.
