ANGOLA, Ind.— Junior forward
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK/) netted his third goal of the weekend to earn the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team a 3-2 victory over Trine University Saturday evening at the Thunder Ice Arena.
Midway through the third period, Karty tallied a power-play goal off assists by
Ryan Bittner (Crookston, MN/) and
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ/) to put UWSP (2-0-0) up 3-1 over Trine (0-2-0). Karty's goal would hold on to be the game-winner.
Following Karty's goal, Lucas Bombardier scored at the 17:10 mark of the third period to put the Thunder within one goal. The Pointers were able to ward off Trine, while playing with a sixth skater for the final 1:48.
Following a scoreless first period,
Tristan Conrad (Lockport, IL) forced a turnover allowing for
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, WI) to bury his second goal in as many days to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
With under one minute remaining in the second, Tanner Bennett scored a power-play goal for the Thunder to even the game at one heading into the final frame.
Midway through the third, Karty set up
Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL) for his first collegiate goal, before Karty's game winner 1:54 later.
Freshman goaltender
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, ON) earned his first collegiate win making 25 saves for the Pointers. Brett Young recorded 42 stops for the Thunder.
UWSP finished 1-for-8 on the power play and the penalty kill warded off seven of Trine's eight power plays.
UW-Stevens Point opens the home half of its season taking on Hamline and Bethel on Nov. 3 and 4. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. for both contests.
