STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) led the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (21-6, 3-1) in both kills and digs for her ninth double-double in the last 11 matches as the Pointers defeated visiting UW-Oshkosh (11-13, 0-4) in four sets on Wednesday night.
Gehl powered home a match-high 21 kills and racked up 19 digs in the Pointers' victory. She added a service ace and an assist in the all-around dominant performance.
Senior
Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) also had a double-double for the Pointers with 18 digs and 11 kills. She added three aces and a block.
Fellow senior
Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) continued her string of double-digit digs with 17 in the match. Freshman
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had a team-high 21 assists with sophomore
Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) adding 14 helpers.
Three early kills by Gehl and an ace from the sophomore couldn't create separation in the first set as the teams split the first 28 points of the match.
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) recorded back-to-back kills and
Shannah Carter (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) served up an aces as the Pointers pulled ahead, 19-14. The five-point run was enough to win the set as Gehl, Emme and Wirkus each had two kills to close out the frame.
After consecutive kills by Wirkus put UWSP in front 6-4, the Titans rattled off seven-straight points to gain the upper hand. Later in the set, senior
Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) closed out a six-point run with a pair of kills to pull UWSP within one at 22-21. Another kill by Wirkus thwarted the first UWO set point, but two points later, the Titans evened the match.
UWSP fell into an early hole in the third set, but a five-point spurt by the Pointers that included a service ace by
Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, Wis./Sauk Prairie) tied the score at 9-9. Wirkus served up and ace and Gehl powered home two kills in another 5-0 run to put the Pointers up 14-12. Magliano recorded another kill as UWSP close the set with five of the final six points.
Wirkus served to open the fourth set and after a pair of kills by Gehl and another by Magliano, the Pointers took a 7-0 lead. Mid set, Wirkus had a pair of kills ahead of a Carter ace in a six-point run to push the advantage to 10 points. Gehl finished off the victory with three kills in the final four UWSP points.
The Pointers close out the home slate on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against UW-Eau Claire. It will be Senior Night, Alumni Night and Alzheimer's Awareness Night.
