Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pointers Take Down Eagles for Big Conference Road Win

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (7-5, 1-1) shot 51 percent from the field and held a double-digit lead most of the game in a 76-58 win at UW-La Crosse (9-4, 1-1) on Saturday.  The Pointers had five players in double figures and never trailed in the game.

Sophomore Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and junior MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) each contributed a team-high 17 points. Seniors Bryce Williams (Maple Grove, Minn./Spring Lake Park) and Aaron Retzlaff (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) added 13 and 10 points each with sophomore Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) also in double figures with 11 points.  Williams hauled in seven boards; Bublitz and Retzlaff had six rebounds each.

Retzlaff scored four-straight points for UWSP to open the game.  Delmore and Bublitz nailed threes as the Pointers jumped up 10-4 in the first four minutes.  Williams and Bublitz combined for a 10-0 UWSP run that put the Pointers ahead 20-6.

Later in the period, sophomore Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) scored four-straight points and MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) drained another three to put UWSP up 18 with seven minutes remaining in the half.  Two minutes later, the Pointers built their biggest lead, 19 points, following a layup by Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial).  Williams hit his second three of the half and UWSP held a 13-point lead at the break.

Bublitz nailed a three in the first minute of the second half and scored the first five points of the stanza.  After another Bublitz bucket just over three minutes in, the Pointers had an almost five-minute dry spell ended by Fredrickson, but UWSP remained in control, up by 14.

A 5-0 run by the Eagles saw the lead drop to single digits, but Delmore converted a pair of three-point plays, one from behind the arc and the other in the form of an and-one.  After a Fredrickson three-pointer, the Eagles cut the lead to eight with 2:51 remaining.  The UWSP defense clamped down and the Pointers ended the game on a 10-0 run to win by 18, the first of interim head coach Kent Dernbach's career.

UWSP returns home to face UW-Stout on Wednesday (Jan. 11) at Bennett Court at 7:00 p.m.
