Pointers Knock Off Yellowjackets 3-1

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - After falling behind a goal by UW-Superior, the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team tallied three goals in the next two periods to defeat the Yellowjackets 3-1 this Tuesday evening at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Yellowjackets (7-9-0, 1-3-0 WIAC) jumped out to an early lead in the first period, but the Pointers (9-5-2, 2-1-0 WIAC) scored three unanswered goals in the final two periods to secure a 3-1 victory.

After a Pointers hooking penalty, Yellowjacket Emily Heid squeezed one by Pointers' goal tender Syndey Conley at 12:32 for an early 1-0 lead. The Pointers challenged Yellowjacket's goal tender Kim Kobar 12 times on net, but were denied from scoring.

In the second period, Division III's best power play unit tallied two goals, one which was a power play goal. The Pointers improved to 18-57 (31.6%) with the person advantage. At 13:40 Maddie Schlossmacher, assisted by Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig), tied the game up at ones. Then about five minutes later, on the power play, Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) put the Pointers ahead at 19:33 to close out the period.

Early in the third period, Lemirande, assisted by Schlossmacher and Punnett, lit the lamp at 2:25 for a two goal lead. The rest of the period remained quiet as a solid defense prevented the Yellowjackets from scoring again.

UW-Stevens Point goes back on the road starting Jan. 20-21 for a two-game series against No. 2 UW-River Falls. Game one Jan. 20 is set for 7:05 p.m. in Hunt Arena.
