Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Last Second Shot Sinks UWSP Upset Bid

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Junior MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) sank both free throws with 13.8 seconds remaining to give the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team a one-point lead, but a basket with one second on the clock gave the host No. 7 UW-River Falls a 69-68 win on Saturday.

Delmore led the Pointers (8-6, 2-2) with 19 points.  He hit four three-pointers and made 7-of-8 free throws.  Sophomore Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) was 3-for-4 from behind the arc and scored 13 in the game.  Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 11 points for UWSP.

Delmore hit his first three of the game two minutes in and gave the Pointers a 5-3 lead.  Senior Brad Freeborn (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) made a bucket to give the Pointers a brief one-point edge just before the midpoint of the first half.

Over a two-and-a-half-minute span later in the period, Delmore had a personal 8-point run for the Pointers to put UWSP in front 26-24.  Fredrickson nailed a three 30 seconds later to push the advantage to five points, the largest lead of the game for the Pointers.  A free throw in the final minute by Bublitz sent the game to break, tied at 33-33.

Five minutes into the second half, senior Bryce Williams (Maple Grove, Minn./Spring Lake Park)' bucket gave the Pointers a 40-39 edge, the first lead of the second half.  Bublitz buried a triple four minutes later and the UWSP lead was four points.  A 7-0 run gave the hosts a three-point lead with eight minutes to go.

Zack Goedeke (Valders, Wis./Valders) converted an and-one with 2:33 remaining to help the Pointers overcome a six-point deficit and tie the game at 64-all.  Delmore then hit four free throws in the final minute to give UWSP a lead in the final 13 seconds before the last second bucket sank the Pointers' upset bid.

UWSP now travels to UW-Platteville on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Bennett Court for a Saturday matchup (Jan. 21) with UW-Eau Claire at 7:00 p.m.  The Pointers will hold an alumni game at 4:00 p.m. prior to the game against the Blugolds.
