Volleyball Battles to Straight-Set Victory in Home Opener

The No. 15 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (5-0) swept visiting Lakeland University (3-2) in the Pointers' home opener at Berg Gym on Wednesday night, 25-15, 26-24, 25-14.  Senior Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) led the way with 14 kills, the lone player of the evening in the double digits.

Fellow senior and WIAC Defensive Player of the Week Bri Piepenbrok (Merrill, WI/Merrill) led all players with 12 digs.  Freshman Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) recorded 19 assists in the win.

With the score knotted at 8-8 in the first set, the Pointers gathered six of the next seven points to take a 14-9 lead.  Later in the set, senior Marie Krengel (Eagan, MN/Eastview) and Cefalu recorded back-to-back kills as UWSP put the first set out of reach.

In set two, junior Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, WI/Auburndale) racked up consecutive aces as the Pointers battled back to a 7-7 tie.  The back-and forth set remained in favor of the Pointers as Cefalu had four successful kills to end single services by the Muskies as UWSP survived the pivotal set.

The momentum carried into the third set as the Pointers jumped out to an early 9-1 advantage and never looked back.  A service ace by Piepenbrok followed two points later by a Kelly Magliano (Chicago, IL/Mount Assisi Academy) kill doubles the UWSP lead to 20-10.

UWSP will remain at home as the Pointers host the Point Invitational this Friday and Saturday.  UWSP opens the tournament at 2:00 p.m. versus Saint Benedict.  Tickets the Point Invitational are $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12 and for seniors 65 and older.  Tickets will be good for all matches on each day.
