LISLE, Ill. - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team swept a mid-week, non-conference doubleheader with Benedictine University today, May 3, winning 12-10 and 9-1.

Seven-of-nine Pointer starters had at least one hit as the Pointers accumulated 16 hits, and plated 12 runs. A triple short of the cycle, Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) led the team going 5-for-6 with a double, home run and knocked in five RBI's.
UWSP (20-16, 9-7 WIAC) didn't waste anytime getting on board scoring four runs right away in the top of the first inning. Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North) began the inning with a triple to right center, and crossed home plate two batter later after a Hanke single. With Doornink on base after a fielder's choice, Peter Strommen (Madison, WI/East) added to the Pointers lead with a two run homer to left field.
Leading 4-0 after the top half of the inning, Benedictine (17-16, 11-7 NACC) responded with three runs of their own. After back-to-back walks, Eagles Dom DeMicco singled through the right side, scoring the two runners on base. An Eagle single then cut the Pointer lead, 4-3. In relief for Ben Servais (East Bethel, MN/St. Francis), Chris Heizel got D.J. Dillion to fly out for the third out.
In the third inning, Parker Sadowski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam) hit his first home run of the season, adding a run to the Pointers 4-3 lead.
Benedictine strung together three hits to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the Eagles ahead, 6-5. The inning was highlighted by a DeMicco triple, scoring two Eagles.
In the top of the sixth, Hanke and the Pointers took the lead back, 8-6, after hitting his fourth home run of the season. Leading up to Hanke's home run, Sawyer Shultz singled and Tyler Thomka (Muskego, WI/Muskego) walked before scoring on Hanke's home run.
Until the top of the ninth, both teams exchanged runs, but the Pointers continued their hot hitting, adding three runs on five hits. With two runners on base, Hanke singled, scoring Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North), followed by a Doornink double, scoring Thomka and Hanke to put the Pointers up by four runs.
With a four run lead, 12-8, the Eagles tried to rally back with two runs, but came up short falling 12-10.

Within the first two innings, the Pointers jumped out to a 6-0 lead getting six of their fifteen hits in the first two innings.Â
Sadowski continued his hot hitting, knocking in two of the three runs in the first inning with a single through the left side.Â
The Pointers scored one run each in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to keep the game out of reach.
The Pointers pitched five different pitchers, limiting the Eagles to just one run on seven hits. Dan VanVliet (1-1) picked up his first win on the season pitching three innings, scattered three hits, and struck out four.Â
UWSP wraps up the regular season with a four game series against No. 4 UW-La Crosse this weekend starting with Alumni Day on Fri., May 6. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
