Pointers Sweep Sabres

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins with shutouts over Marian University 5-0 and 12-0.

UWSP 5 Marian 0

Ben Servais (East Bethel, MN/St. Francis) pitched a complete game shutout in Game oneof the doubleheader to lead the Pointers (11-13) to a 5-0 victory over the Sabres (7-20). Servais allowed eight hits and had one walk and one strikeout in the win.

At the plate, Sawyer Schultz (Appleton, WI/North) led the Pointers going 3-4 with a run scored. Turner Doornink (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) and Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) each drove in two runs for UWSP.

The Pointers got the scoring started in the fourth inning after Schultz singled, followed by an Alex Slowey (Westfield, WI/Westfield) walk and a two run double by Rose. The Pointers then added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

In all, the Pointers tallied 14 hits in the game.

UWSP 12  Marian 0

In Game two, five different Pointer pitchers combined to throw a seven inning shutout. Alex Thompson (Tomah, WI/Tomah) pitched three innings picking up the win allowing one hit and striking out two.

After scoring two runs apiece in each of the first two innings, the Pointers broke the game open in the third by scoring six runs. Doornink led off the inning with a walk, followed by walks by Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) and Parker Sadowski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam).

Slowey then singled in a run followed by a two-run single by Ben Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton). The Pointers then scored two runs on a throwing error, and ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Peter Strommen (Madison, WI/East).

Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, IL/Boylan Catholic) was 3-for-5 in the game with two runs and two runs batted in. Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) also had two hits and two RBIs.

The Pointers resume WIAC conference play on Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24 at University Field against UW-Platteville. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 12 p.m.
