LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – For the fifth time in program history, the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team is the champion of the NCAA Division III world.
Box ScoreThe No. 3 Pointers (24-5-2) used swarming defense and goals from five different players to skate past in-state rival and second-ranked St. Norbert College 5-1 on Saturday evening at Herb Brooks Arena.
Site of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice," the Pointers needed little in the way of a miracle to defeat the Green Knights, never trailing and holding the lead for all but 9:27 of the game, all of that coming in the first period when St. Norbert was tied 1-1 with UWSP.
Special teams played a role in the Pointers victory as it did so many times down the stretch of the season, with the Pointers capitalizing on three power play opportunities on the evening.
Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak), named Most Outstanding Player of the Championship, put the Pointers on the board just 2:40 into the first period, scoring off a
Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL) pass.
A St. Norbert power play goal just minutes later evened the score at 1-1.
All-Tournament Team honoree and AHCA All-American
Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI) scored the eventual game-winner at 18:52 of the first, putting UWSP in front 2-1.
In the second,
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) scored to give the Pointers a 3-1 edge heading into the final period.
In the final 20 minutes,
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) each tallied goals to put the game out of reach for SNC.
