MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team put together 16 top-10 individual finishes at the unscored Minnesota Challenge this weekend at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Results Nate Somers (Oshkosh, WI) led the way for UW-Stevens Point with three top-10 swims. The freshman won the 1,650 freestyle (16:15.32), was second in the 400 IM (4:13.51) and was seventh in the 500 free (4:43.68). The only swimmers to finish ahead of Somers in the 400 IM and 500 free were from the University of Minnesota.
Five other UW-Stevens Point swimmers recorded two top-10 finishes each. Just Fernandez was third in the 400-yard IM (4:14.25) and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.21).
Garrett Richetto (Wausau, WI) placed eighth in both the 100 free (47.42) and 200 free (1:44.25) and his time in the 200 free was the best among Division III competitors.
Grant Moser (St. Michael, MN) finished seventh in the 100 butterfly (42.54) and 10th in the 200 IM (1:59.14), which was fourth-best by a Division III swimmer.
Jack Englehardt (Madison, WI) posted the second-best time by a Division III competitor in the 50 free and finished sixth overall (21.18), while also finishing ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.44).
Ethan Bott (Whitefish Bay, WI) placed in the top 10 in the 100 backstroke (53.76) and 200 backstroke (1:58.58). His time in the 200 backstroke was the second-fastest by Division III swimmers in the field.
Ben Schilz (Green Bay, WI)'s time of 2:10.66 was good for fourth in the 200 breaststroke, while
Austin Teunissen (Bismarck, ND) was eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:05.07).
Andrew King (Palatine, IL) placed eighth in the 50 free (21.40).
UW-Stevens Point, which was ranked No. 9 in the Central Region last week, competes at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships on Feb. 18-20 in Brown Deer, Wis. in search of its 17th consecutive conference title.
