SUPERIOR, Wis. - The No. 5/6 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored six goals in the final period to pull away from Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe UW-Superior to win 9-1 on Saturday evening at Wessman Arena.
Box ScoreUW-Stevens Point (18-4-1, 4-2-0 WIAC) scored the game's first three goals before UW-Superior (8-13-2, 2-4-0 WIAC) got one back late in the second. However, the Pointers scored three times in the first 8:31 of the third and three more in a little over six minutes later on to score at least nine goals for the fourth time this season.
With the Pointers ahead 3-1 after two,
Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) started the third-period barrage by scoring at 2:47 of the third off a pass from
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison), who registered two assists in the game. Kalisz's two helpers made him one of six UWSP skaters with multiple points on the night and gave him back-to-back four-point games.
Davis and
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) scored 1:02 apart at 7:29 and 8:31 as the Pointers went ahead 6-1 midway through the third.
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) recorded his second-career two-goal game, both against the Yellowjackets, by scoring consecutive goals 3:41 apart later in the third before
Joey Haydock (Junction City, WI) capped the scoring at 17:21.
In the early stages,
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead after the first by forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and scoring shorthanded at 10:38 of the first. The goal was the sixth shorthanded tally of Cornellier's UWSP career.
It did not take long in the second period for UW-Stevens Point to double its lead, as Davis netted his first goal of the night at 1:48. The score remained 2-0 until
Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI) scored his fourth of the season inside the final five minutes but Daniel Litchke got UW-Superior's lone goal of the night at 16:57 of the second to make it 3-1 after two.
Davis recorded his second hat-trick of the seasson, being one of four skaters to record three points. Barber recorded two goals and an assist, while Cornellier had a goal and two assists, along with Beauvais who tallied three assists on the evening. Haydock also added a goal and an assist for his first-career multi-point game at UWSP.
UW-Stevens Point outshot UW-Superior 37-30 in the game, including 15-8 in the third period.
Jesse Gordichuk (Penticton, BC) made 29 saves, one shy of his career high, to improve to 5-1-0 this season in his seventh start. Ethan Wood stopped 28 shots for the Yellowjackets.
The Pointers close out their regular-season schedule with a pair of WIAC games at K.B. Willett Arena next weekend, beginning with a matchup with UW-Stout on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
