McGann's career-high 35 power men's basketball past Pioneers, into WIAC tournament

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Sean McGann (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) scored a career-high 35 points to lead the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a 72-64 win over UW-Platteville on Wednesday evening at Bo Ryan Court, as the Pointers clinched a spot in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship.

McGann scored 21 of his 35 points in the second half for UW-Stevens Point (14-10, 7-6 WIAC), shooting a perfect 8-for-8 after the break. He finished 14-for-19 from the floor and added six rebounds in 38 minutes of work.
 
UWSP held a 26-24 lead over UW-Platteville (10-14,4-9 WIAC) entering the second half after shooting just 32.4 percent in the first half. However, the Pointers shot a blistering 80.0 percent (16-for-20) from the floor on their way to 46 second-half points.
 
The Pointers led 50-45 with 7:09 remaining before going on an 8-0 run to take a double-digit lead. McGann scored six of the team's eight points during the spurt.
 
UWSP led by as many as 13 down the stretch and never sacrificed the lead after McGann put in a layup to take a 13-11 lead with 8:41 remaining in the first half.
 
In addition to McGann's career night, senior guard Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) added 11 points, going 2-for-5 from behind the arc. Luke Zuiker (Marshfield, WI/Marshfield) and Brett Tauber (Madison, WI/Memorial) each added six points off the bench.
 
Boston Johnson paced UW-Platteville with 22 points on 9-for-13 from the field and added a team-high seven rebounds. Robert Duax scored 13 points off the bench for the Pioneers, shooting 5-for-10 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from long distance.
 
The Pointers will close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20 by traveling to UW-Lacrosse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
