SUPERIOR, Wis. –
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) had 34 saves helping the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team to a 2-1 WIAC Conference win over UW-Superior this Saturday evening at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.
UWSP (3-3-1, 1-1-0 WIAC) gave up a power play goal late in the second period, but rallied in the second and third periods to defeat Superior (4-4-0, 1-1-0 WIAC). Conley faced 19 shots in the third period, but stifled the Yellow Jackets' offense to earn the win.
After an evenly matched first period, neither goalie allowed a score. Conley stopped all eight shots faced, while Yellow Jackets' Kim Kobar held the Pointers offense scoreless saving seven shots.
At 15:58 of the second period, Molly Shelton scored with the person advantage thanks to a Pointers' interference penalty. Shortly after the power play goal was scored, the Pointers committed another penalty putting the Yellow Jackets back on the power play. Despite being short handed, senior
Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) broke away and netted her third goal of the season tying the game 1-1.
In the third period, Conley was tested early and often having faced 19 shots, doubling the amount of shots faced in the first and second periods combined. The Pointers managed eight shots on goal in the third period with none more important than
Maddie Schlossmacher (Roseville, MN/Roseville)'s, assisted by
Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and
Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, MN/Waconia), power play goal at the 13:48 minute mark to take a 2-1 lead.
Superior had an opportunity to even the score having the advantage because of a Pointers hooking penalty, but the Pointers killed the power play and Conley saved all four shots to close out the game.
The Pointers return home for a five-game home stand starting Dec. 3 against Northland College. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
