OWINGS MILL, Md. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (0-2) suffered its second-straight setback, falling to No. 2 Christopher Newport (2-0) on Friday at the Hoopsville Classic, 71-51.
Sophomore
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) scored a team-high 16 points for UWSP. Fellow sophomore
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) had a career-best 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting including a pair of three-pointers.
Bublitz hit a three within the first 30 seconds of the game and had the first five UWSP points. Sophomore
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) added a bucket as the Pointers jumped out to a 7-2 lead early. Frederickson hit from beyond the arc twice to knot the game at 13-13.
The Captains went on a 17-4 run to push the Pointers' deficit to 13 with just under three minutes left in the first half. Bublitz and Nelson added points in the paint late and Bublitz nailed a three just before half to cut the CNU lead to eight at the break.
Nelson hit a three in the opening seconds of the second half and scored UWSP's next points nearly four minutes later, but CNU heated up from long range to push the lead to 15 just five minutes into the second stanza.
Junior
Luke Zuiker (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) hit a bucket at the midway point of the second half to snap a 7-0 run by the Captains. Bublitz made the lone shot for the Pointers over the next seven minutes of play and the second-ranked Captains cruised to the win.
The Pointers play Lynchburg on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (CT) in UWSP's finale of the Hoopsville Classic. UWSP will conclude the season-opening road trip on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Lakeland before the home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:00 p.m. versus UW-Superior.
