Bri Piepenbrok (Merrill, WI/Merrill) recorded 20 digs to tie the single-season school record for digs at 676 as the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (26-6, 4-3) won in straight-sets at UW-River Falls (15-16, 1-6) to wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon.
The Pointers, who tied for fourth in the league standings a game back of the tri-champions, will open the WIAC Tournament on Tuesday with a visit to UW-Eau Claire.
Seniors
Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) and
Gabby Thomas (Henderson, MN/LeSueur-Henderson) each recorded nine kills to lead the UWSP attack which steadily improved as the match went on. Sophomore
Brittany Laffin (Carpentersville, IL/Hampshire) had her second-straight match with 27 assists, tying a season-high.
The Pointers had nine kills in the first set while holding the Falcons to a -.033 hitting percentage in a 25-15 set win. UWSP improved upon its .115 hitting percentage in the first set to a .222 percentage in set two, a 25-19 set victory.
UWSP upped its hitting percentage again in the third set to .314 to close out the match 25-13. Defensively, the Pointers held UWRF to a -.051 hitting percentage for the match.
Freshman
Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, WI/Sauk Prairie ) had five service aces in the match for the Pointers.
UWSP enters the WIAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will look to avenge a regular season loss at UW-Eau Claire at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
