STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) recorded his first-career hat trick and the No. 5/6 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored six times in the second period to record a 9-2 win over Lake Forest on Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena on Put A Check to Cancer Night.
Box Score Sharkey scored twice in the six-goal barrage during the second period for UW-Stevens Point (15-4-1), which completed a weekend sweep of Lake Forest (6-13-0) in a home-and-home series.
UW-Stevens Point and Lake Forest were even at one apiece after Ian Pichel canceled out
Alex Brooks (Grand Rapids, MI)' opener inside the first minute of the second period. However, the Pointers offense exploded for six goals from five different skaters to blow the game open.
Sharkey started the outburst, scoring his first of the evening at 2:05 on the power play, putting the Pointers up 2-1. Just 1:21 later,
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) made it 3-1 before UW-Stevens Point scored four times in 6:41 to go ahead 7-1.
Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston) and
Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON) each grabbed their first-career goals late in the period after Sharkey's second of the night. The Foresters grabbed one back midway through the third before
Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) and Sharkey scored in the final four minutes.
Sharkey had a four-point night, adding an assist to his hat trick.
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) handed out three assists, while
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK),
Nick D'Avolio (North Riverside, IL), Strong and
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) all had two points.
UW-Stevens Point outshot Lake Forest 38-8 in the game, including 16-1 in the first period, the second-fewest shots allowed since the Pointers held St. Norbert to seven shots on Nov. 1, 1991 in a 21-1 victory.
Jesse Gordichuk (Penticton, BC) made six saves, while Leo Podolsky, Billy Cooper, and Louis Philippe De Courcy combined for 29 saves.
The game was played in front of 1,357 fans on UW-Stevens Point's seventh annual Put A Check to Cancer Night. The Pointers raised $5,255 through auctioning off their game-worn pink jerseys.
The Pointers will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a trip to UW-Stout. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
