LA CROSSE, Wis. –
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) scored a career-high 19 points off the bench and the No. 19 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team made eight consecutive free throws in the final 54 seconds to defeat UW-La Crosse 55-48 on Saturday evening at Mitchell Hall.
Box Score Roland shot 5-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line and also grabbed seven rebounds for UW-Stevens Point (14-3, 5-1 WIAC). The Pointers led UW-La Crosse (6-11, 0-6 WIAC) by just three points with 1:17 remaining but Roland made six of UW-Stevens Point's eight consecutive free throws down the stretch. The win was UW-Stevens Point's 11th in its last 12 games.
Roland accounted for 19 of UW-Stevens Point's 28 bench points in the game and helped the Pointers' reserves outscore UW-La Crosse's bench 28-6.
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) chipped in with seven points off the bench as well.
UW-Stevens Point led 19-18 with 3:35 remaining in the second quarter before closing the half on a 10-0 run to go into the break up 11.
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) started the spurt with a three and Roland scored six during the run, including a three at the buzzer.
UW-La Crosse started a rally in the third quarter, doubling up the Pointers 16-8 in the period to go to the fourth down 37-34. The Eagles were within three twice in the final quarter but could get no closer.
In addition to Roland's career night, Anklam and
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) each scored 10 points in the victory for UW-Stevens Point, which shot 40.5 percent (17-for-42) from the field. The Pointers shot 81.8 percent (18-for-22) from the charity stripe to help overcome 18 turnovers.
MaKenzie Miller paced UW-La Crosse with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Maggi Bishop added 11 points. The Eagles shot 50.0 percent (19-for-38) from the floor but were plagued by 26 turnovers.
UWSP stays on the road as they take on UW-Stout on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
