HANCOCK, Mich. – Eight different players scored touchdowns as the UW-Stevens Point football team defeated Finlandia University 77-6 on Saturday afternoon at McAfee Field.
Box Score Jerry Williams (Milwaukee, WI/Watertown),
DeJuan Wright (St. Petersburg, FL/Keswick Christian) and
Britton Vernon (Stillman Valley, IL/Stillman Valley) each found the end zone twice for UW-Stevens Point (2-1). The Pointers outgained first-year program Finlandia (0-4) by a 595-152 margin.
The Lions opened the scoring at 10:39 of the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown pass from Ronald Brown to Darrion Robinson following an interception. The Pointers blocked the ensuing extra point making it 6-0 Finlandia early.
UW-Stevens Point hit right back when Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, giving UWSP a 7-6 lead with 10:22 left in the first quarter. The return was UW-Stevens Point's first kickoff return touchdown since Nov. 13, 2010. The Pointers made it 14-6 after a quarter when Wright scored on a 12-yard run.
The Pointers broke the game wide open in the second quarter by scoring five touchdowns. Vernon scored on runs of one and 10 yards in the quarter.
Matt Sosinsky (Princeton, WI/Princeton) hauled in a 10-yard scoring pass from Larson and Wright and
Christian Almonte (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) added rushing touchdowns of 10 and 68 yards, respectively.
UW-Stevens Point led 49-6 at the half and scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter.
Ryan Swigart (Winnebago, IL/Winnebago) threw his first collegiate touchdown to Williams on a 50-yard pass play early in the third quarter.

Nick Schroeder (Manitowoc, WI/Lincoln) ran for an eight-yard touchdown.
Cooper Kerner (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) and
Steve Herra (Rockford, IL/Boylan) connected for a 10-yard scoring pass later in the third and
Darin Ward (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary's Springs) capped the scoring with a 40-yard run just nine seconds into the fourth quarter.
UW-Stevens Point racked up 355 of its 595 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Almonte led the way with 97 yards on six carries, while Ward added 94 on six rushes.
Larson finished 7-for-12 for 154 yards with a touchdown and an interception in limited action. Sosinsky caught four passes for 121 yards and the second-quarter score.
The Pointers held the Lions to 16 yards on the ground on 34 attempts. Robinson had five catches for 95 yards, including a 59-yard catch on a wide receiver pass to open the second half.
Blake Lehman (Edgar, WI/Edgar) and
Adam Wachowiak (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) each had seven tackles to lead the UW-Stevens Point defense.
Deion Jones (Racine, WI/Horlick) added a 39-yard return on an interception.
The Pointers host UW-Eau Claire in its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at Community Stadium at Goerke Park.
