Volleyball improves to 10-0 for first time by sweeping Lawrence and St. Norbert

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) totaled 17 kills as the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point volleyball team moved to 10-0 for the first time ever by defeating Lawrence and St. Norbert by 3-0 scores on Wednesday evening at Berg Gym.

Five players had between six and eight kills for UW-Stevens Point (10-0) as the Pointers hit .390 as a team to defeat Lawrence (1-12) 25-5, 25-11, 25-12. Kelly Magliano (Chicago, IL/Mount Assisi Academy) led the way with a career-high eight kills and hit .462.

Gabby Thomas (Henderson, MN/LeSueur-Henderson) added seven and Ellen Drewry (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee), Emma Brunkhorst (Germantown, WI/Germantown) and Cefalu each registered six. Brittany Laffin (Carpentersville, IL/Hampshire) handed out 24 assists in the win.

UW-Stevens Point's defense held Lawrence to a -.095 hitting percentage in the match. Thomas and Hannah Picel (West Bend, WI/West Bend West) each had 11 digs, while Thomas and Brunkhorst combined for eight blocks assists.

The Pointers won 13 of the first 15 points and 19 of the first 22 to race through the first set. UW-Stevens Point hit .565 and did not commit an error in the first set.

UW-Stevens Point cooled off to an attack percentage of .241 in the second set but used a 6-0 run to take a 15-8 lead and never looked back. The Pointers hit an even .400 in the third to see out the win.

Cefalu posted the first double-digit kill effort of her career, finishing with a match-high 11 kills to lead the Pointers past St. Norbert (3-7) 25-21, 26-24, 25-11.

The junior hit .346 in the match and four other UWSP players had between six and eight kills. Thomas and Brunkhorst each had eight kills, Bella Nelson (Luck, WI/Luck) added seven and Drewry tallied six.

UW-Stevens Point built a 23-16 lead late in the second set before St. Norbert got within four with three straight points. The Pointers regrouped after a timeout and closed out the set on a kill by Brunkhorst.

The Pointers trailed 24-22 deep in the second set but a kill by Nelson and a block by Cefalu and Brunkhorst leveled matters at 24-24. UW-Stevens Point made it four points in a row with a kill by Thomas and an attack error by St. Norbert to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.

UW-Stevens Point rolled through the third set by hitting .360 and holding St. Norbert to an attack percentage of -.034. Laffin registered 32 assists for her eighth 30-assist performance in 10 matches to start her career.

Piepenbrok tallied a match-high 17 digs, while Picel added 14. The Pointers also held an 8-2 edge in total blocks.

Halie Ferry led St. Norbert with nine kills, while Aubree Antosch made 13 digs.

This weekend, UW-Stevens Point travels to Kenosha to play four matches against ranked teams at the Carthage Invitational. The Pointers face the 13th-ranked University of Chicago and eighth-ranked Carthage at 8 p.m. on Friday before taking on 25th-ranked Dominican and 14th-ranked Elmhurst on Saturday.
