Baseball headed to deciding game after falling to Warhawks at WIAC Championship

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Top-seeded UW-Whitewater used three three-run innings to defeat the third-seeded UW-Stevens Point baseball team and force a deciding game in the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Baseball Championship on Saturday afternoon at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium.

Five players had multi-hit performances for UW-Whitewater (33-8), which scored the first seven runs of the game. UW-Stevens Point (30-12) came back to get within two, 7-5, but the Warhawks scored three in the top of the ninth and closed out the victory.
 
The Pointers and Warhawks will meet for the seventh time this season with the title on the line on Sunday, May 10 at noon. UWSP and UWW have split the previous six meetings and Sunday's winner will earn the WIAC's automatic berth into an NCAA regional.
 
UW-Whitewater jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in its first at-bats of the game, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The Warhawks opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mikole Pierce and added two more on an error following a single by Daytona Bryden.
 
The Warhawks scored three more in the fourth, two of the runs scoring on doubles by Jordan Kuczynski and Nick Kuhlmann. The Pointers got on the board in the sixth on a RBI double by Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) to left and added three more on a bases-clearing, three-run double by Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) to right center.
 
Trailing 7-4, Beau blasted his second home run of the season to left-center field in the eighth to bring UW-Stevens Point within two, 7-5. Beau was 2-for-4 with a run and a career-high four RBI in the loss.
 
UW-Whitewater tallied four hits in a three-run ninth, scoring on successive singles by Steve Chamberlain, Bryden and Mike Mierow. Chamberlain led the Warhawks' offense, going 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, while Mierow drove in two runs.
 
Curtis Morgan held UW-Stevens Point scoreless until the sixth and improved to 8-0 this season despite allowing four runs in 5.1 innings. Three UWW relievers combined to record the final 11 outs for the Warhawks.
 
Cole Erickson (Deerfield, WI/Deerfield) started for the Pointers and went the first 3.2 innings before giving way to three relievers. David VanVliet (Lowell, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) threw a career-high four innings with a pair of strikeouts.
