Softball earns second win over ranked opponent with game two win over UW-La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team rebounded from an 8-5 loss in the opener to take game two of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at No. 23 UW-La Crosse 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field.

No. 23 UW-La Crosse 8, UW-Stevens Point 5 | Box

Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) hit two two-run home runs for UW-Stevens Point (14-23, 4-10 WIAC) but UW-La Crosse (25-11, 10-4 WIAC) took the lead with a five-run first inning and held on the rest of the way to win the opener.

Schreiner hit her first home run in the top of the first to give the Pointers an early 2-0 lead but the Eagles hit right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Megan Nelson and Alecia Faber singled in runs to tie the game, before Mary Kate Pryor hit a two-out three-run double to make it 5-2.

After the Eagles added a run in the second, Schreiner sent her second home run of the game over the right-field fence to cut the Eagles' lead in half in the third. The senior's two home runs ties the school record for home runs in a game and is the 11th time in program history that a player has gone deep twice in a game.

A sacrifice fly from Samantha Olson (New Lisbon, WI/New Lisbon) later in the third brought UW-Stevens Point within one. The Pointers had chances to tie the game with runners on the corners and one out in the fourth and the bases loaded with one out in the fifth but were unable to score.

Katie Klein allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and move to 6-1 this season for the Eagles. UW-La Crosse added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on Pryor's second two-out, bases-loaded hit of the game, a two-run single up the middle.

Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano) was 2-for-4 with two runs, both on Schreiner's home runs, and Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) also added two hits for the Pointers. The multi-hit game was Allen's team-best 11th of the season, while Schreiner and Raddant each recorded their 10th multi-hit games.

UW-Stevens Point bounced back in game two, picking up its second win over a ranked opponent this season with a 4-2 victory. Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union) provided the game-winning hit with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh that broke a 2-2 tie.

With the score tied at 2-2 after six, the Pointers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh after a walk, a double by Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) and a hit batter. Klein then recorded the second out with a strikeout but Sheahan laced the decisive double to left center, scoring Sawdey and pinch runner Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union).

In the bottom of the seventh, UW-La Crosse got the winning run to the plate with runners on the corners with two outs, but Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) got the final out on liner to Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) at third base.

Gorges threw her eighth complete game of the season and held the Eagles to two runs or fewer for the eighth time in 36 games this season. The lefthander did not walk a batter and allowed two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

The Pointers had just four hits in the game but took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Raddant led off the inning with a double before a walk to Schreiner. Allen then reached on an error, scoring Raddant, and Breanna Ellison (Pepin, WI/Pepin) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Schreiner.

The Eagles tied the game in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by Emily Holldorf. UW-La Crosse at the go-ahead run at third with one out in the bottom of the sixth but Olson erased the threat by picking the runner off third.

UWSP's other win over a ranked team this season was an 8-6 victory over then-undefeated and No. 5-ranked Luther on the road on April 6.

UW-Stevens Point concludes its regular-season schedule with a doubleheader at UW-Platteville on Sunday, April 26 at noon and 2 p.m. The Pointers need to sweep the Pioneers and have UW-Superior win at least one game of a doubleheader against UW-River Falls in order to make the six-team WIAC Championship. UWSP has not been in the WIAC Tournament since 2009.
