STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Third-ranked UW-Whitewater recorded 17 hits in each game and swept the No. 11-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader 20-5 and 11-1 on Wednesday afternoon at University Field.
No. 3 UW-Whitewater 20, No. 11 UW-Stevens Point 5 (7 inn.) | Box UW-Whitewater (23-4, 11-3 WIAC) raced out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning and had six players with multi-hit games.
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) went 2-for-4 with two RBI for UW-Stevens Point (19-11, 10-8 WIAC).
The Warhawks scored five runs on four hits in the first inning, as five of their first six batters reached base. The visitors also scored three in the fourth, four in the fifth and six in the seventh.
Casey Power led UW-Whitewater with two hits and four RBI. Steve Chamberlain scored five times and reached base all six times, while Kle Haen and Mike Mierow each knocked in three runs.
Spetz and Gregorich started the game with doubles to produce UW-Stevens Point's first run. Gregorich added a run-scoring single up the middle in the third.
Kyle McHugh (Polonia, WI/Rosholt) and
Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) plated runs with sacrifice flies and
Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) also doubled in a run for the Pointers.
John Olejniczak earned the win for UW-Whitewater with 1.1 innings of scoreless work in relief of Curtis Morgan.
No. 3 UW-Whitewater 11, No. 11 UW-Stevens Point 1 (7 inn.) | Box UW-Whitewater scored in six of the seven innings and used a five-run fourth inning to build a 7-1 lead. Chamberlain led the way by going 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, while Power and Mierow each had three RBI.
The teams traded solo home runs in the second inning to start the scoring. Mierow homered to left center for UW-Whitewater.
Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) replied with his WIAC-best eighth home run of the season to right center for UW-Stevens Point in the bottom of the inning.
Power gave the Warhawks a 2-1 lead with a RBI single in the third before the visitors scored five runs on six hits in the fourth. All five runs in the inning came with two outs as eight-straight batters reached base safely.
Gregorich and Hanke each had two hits for the Pointers and
Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) added one. Spetz has now reached base in 35 consecutive games dating back to last season. Colin Grove improved to 6-1 for the Warhawks with six innings of one-run ball.
UW-Stevens Point looks to return to the win column with a doubleheader against St. Scholastica on Sunday, April 26. Game one begins at 1 p.m. at University Field.
