DECATUR, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team got out to early leads in both games but Millikin came back to sweep the Pointers 7-3 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Borg Warner Field.
Millikin 7, UW-Stevens Point 3 | Box UW-Stevens Point (6-9) scored the first three runs of the game but Millkin (10-10) tallied the final seven runs to defeat the Pointers despite being outhit 10-8.
UWSP registered four hits in the first inning and turned them into two runs on a two-run single by
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin). After scoring the two runs, the Pointers had the bases loaded with one out but Millikin's Cathy Lebryk was able to avoid further damage.
The Pointers tacked on a third run in the top of the third, as
Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) came around to score on a single by
Alison Kuhne (New Berlin, WI/West ). However, the Big Blue's Alyssa Visvardis hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.
Millikin went on to score one in the fifth and three in the sixth, including a two-run home run by Justice Miller, and Lebryk held UW-Stevens Point scoreless the rest of the way. Lebryk went the distance for the Big Blue, while
Miranda Morrison (Madison, WI/East) fanned nine in 5.1 innings for UWSP.
Millikin 6, UW-Stevens Point 5 | Box UW-Stevens Point led 5-0 after five and a half innings before Millikin used a six-runs bottom of the sixth to win the nightcap.
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) opened the scoring in the first, as
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) singled in
Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano). The score remained 1-0 until Uhlenbrauck started a four-run sixth with a solo home run.
Later in the inning,
Cassidy Winter (Westfield, WI/Westfield) had an RBI single and Raddant added a two-run shot off Lebryk to give the Pointers a 5-0 lead. However, the Big Blue scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning to seal the sweep.
Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) shut Millikin down over the first five innings and ended up allowing five runs, four earned, in 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. Heather Doyle earned the win in relief of Lebryk, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames.
UW-Stevens Point plays a doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday, March 29, beginning at 2 p.m.
