Baseball closes out Florida trip with 6-5 win over St. Olaf

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 13 UW-Stevens Point baseball team closed out its 10-game Florida trip with a 6-5 victory over St. Olaf on Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Complex.

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point (7-3) scored two runs in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings and held off an eighth-inning rally by St. Olaf (2-5). Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) tossed the final 1.2 innings to record the save, striking out two and giving up just a single hit.

The Pointers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a RBI triple by Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette) and Carlson then came around on a sacrifice fly by Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North). After the Oles got a run back, Greco doubled in Carlson in the fourth, before scoring on a Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol) single.

Trailing 4-1, St. Olaf got two runs back in the fifth off UWSP starter Cole Erickson (Deerfield, WI/Deerfield), who picked up his second win of the season. A two-run double by Peter Strommen (Madison, WI/East) in the bottom of the frame gave the Pointers their three-run lead back.

Jake Mathison's two-run single in the eighth again got the Oles within a run but Beau shut the door to record his second save of the season. Mathison also started for St. Olaf, giving up six runs in five innings.

Eight hitters tallied at least one hit in the game for UW-Stevens Point. Erickson worked the first 4.1 innings before giving way to Ryan Williams (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) and Beau.

The Pointers play a doubleheader at St. Norbert on Saturday, March 28 at 12 p.m. in De Pere, Wis.
