Baseball loses opener to Webster in 11 innings

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 10 UW-Stevens Point baseball team fell 3-2 in 11 innings to Webster University in its season-opener on Thursday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Main Field.

Box Score

Down by one, UW-Stevens Point (0-1) had runners on the corners with nobody out in the bottom of the 11th but Webster (5-4) escaped the jam with a strikeout, a batter's interference call and a groundout to the pitcher. The Pointers held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 earlier in the game.

The Gorlocks scored the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Ty Hoffhines. The sacrifice fly still left runners on second and third with one out but Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) escaped further damage.

UW-Stevens Point opened the scoring in the top of the third on a two-out RBI single by Riley Spetz (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sevastopol), scoring Alex Tarras (Weston, WI/D.C. Everest). The hit was part of a 3-for-5 performance by Spetz.

Webster knotted the score at 1-1 on a run-scoring double by Jeff Kammer in the fourth but UWSP took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning. The Pointers scratched across a run as Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) singled, stole second and scored when Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) reached on an error.

The Gorlocks again tied the game in the top of the sixth, starting the inning with a double by Charlie Gandolfi, who scored on a single by Blake Thomas.

Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) had a no-decision in his first collegiate start for UWSP, giving up two earned runs in seven innings. Beau gave up seven hits and struck out three with just one walk.

Prebelski tossed the final four innings and took the loss despite giving up just one hit. Chris Jansen earned the win for Webster, while Trey Tigart picked up his second save by getting out of the jam in the bottom of the 11th.

The Pointers face Benedictine (Ill.) at 4 p.m. EST on Friday, March 13.
