With just 0.2 seconds left on the clock, UW-Superior (18-7, 12-4 WIAC) inbounded the ball to Sally Linzmeier at half court but her desperation heave would not have counted.
The win gives UW-Stevens Point (13-12, 8-8 WIAC) its 15th consecutive winning season. The Pointers have also won at least eight conference games in each of the last 15 years.
Both teams entered the game already having secured berths in the 2015 WIAC Women's Basketball Championship. UW-Superior has claimed at least a share of the regular season championship, while UW-Stevens Point will be either the fourth or fifth seed, depending on the outcome of the UW-Platteville versus UW-River Falls game tonight.
The Pointers and Yellowjackets were tied at 54-54 with 55 seconds remaining after
Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble) drained a pair of free throws. UWSP took a two-point lead after
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) knocked down two at the line but Brynn Liljander did the same to know the game at 56-56.
UW-Superior then got the ball back with 25 seconds remaining with a chance to win the game but Linzmeier's pass went through the legs of a teammate, setting up Destache's heroics.
UW-Stevens Point held a 31-21 lead at halftime after limiting UW-Superior to 36.4 percent from the floor in the opening half. However, the Yellowjackets opened the second half on an 8-0 run to get right back in the game.
The Pointers responded with an 8-2 run to extend their lead back to eight, the largest lead of the second half. UWS again fought back and took its first lead since the opening four minutes at 41-40 with 8:49 remaining.
UWSP held a five-point lead with 2:34 to go after a jumper by
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) but the Yellowjackets tied the score at 52-52 after a Linzmeier jumper and a three by Allyssa Lindberg.
Linzmeier scored a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds and five assists. Liljander came off the bench to score 11, eight of which came in the second half, for UW-Superior, which shot 36.5 percent in the game.
Miceli had 15 points and seven rebounds off the UWSP bench. The junior has now had the top-three scoring games of her career in her last three games against UW-Superior.
UW-Stevens Point will await results later tonight to find out its opponent in the first round of the WIAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
