EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team got goals from five different players and scored the final four goals of a 5-2 victory over ninth-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Center.
Box ScoreUW-Eau Claire (15-5-2, 7-2-0 WIAC) led 2-1 after a period but UW-Stevens Point (17-5-0, 7-2-0) held the Blugolds scoreless and scored three second-period goals to pull away. The win moves the Pointers back into first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) standings, two points ahead of both UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire with two games to go.
Trailing 2-1 after one period,
Andrew Kolb (Toledo, OH/Toledo Catholic) knotted the score at 2-2, scoring at 9:16 of the second period, as part of a three-point night. Under four minutes later,
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) scored for the second-straight night to give UWSP a 3-2 lead. Sharkey's goal was his sixth in the last six games.
Before the second period was over, UW-Stevens Point extended its lead to 4-2 when
Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) found the back of the net for the fifth time this season at 18:27.
Kyle Brodie (Denver, CO/Northglenn) capped the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:06 of the final period.
Brodie's power-play goal was his second in as many nights and UWSP's 15th power-play goal in the last nine games. Over that stretch, the Pointers have scored at least one goal with the man advantage in all nine games.
Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) made 23 of his 32 saves over the final two periods to pick up the win and improve to 17-4-0 this season. Jay Deo took the loss despite stopping 38 shots for the Blugolds.
Scott Henegar (Trenton, MI/Trenton) gave UW-Stevens Point a 1-0 lead at 7:37 of the first period but UW-Eau Claire hit back with two goals in the space of 1:21 to take its only lead of the game. Mac Jansen and Ross Andersen tallied the goals for the Blugolds.
UWSP was 1-for-4 on the power play, while UWEC was 0-for-3.
UW-Stevens Point plays at No. 6/7 UW-River Falls on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:05 p.m. The Pointers and Falcons split a weekend series in Stevens Point on Jan. 16-17.
