KENOSHA, Wis. –
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) posted her second double-double of the season and
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) made a late layup to help the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to a 63-60 road victory at No. 23 Carthage on Saturday afternoon at Tarble Arena.
Box Score Miceli finished with career-high totals of 18 points and 16 rebounds for UW-Stevens Point (4-2), which recorded its second win over a ranked opponent this season. UWSP and Carthage (4-2) were meeting for the first time since Feb. 4, 1978 in a series the Pointers now lead 4-1.
The Lady Reds took a 60-58 lead with 2:40 remaining on a three-pointer by Mandy Hozzian but that was the last points the hosts would score in the game. After a Miceli free throw cut the Carthage lead to one,
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) found Hennes under the basket for a layup on a baseline inbounds play to give the Pointers a 61-60 lead.
With UW-Stevens Point up 62-60 shortly thereafter, the Pointers got a stop and Anklam was fouled after corralling a rebound with two seconds to go. The junior hit one of two free throws but Carthage's last-gasp desperation heave at the buzzer was no good.
Hennes joined Miceli in double figures with 17 points, matching the second-highest total of her UWSP career. Hennes shot 7-for-17 from the field, while Miceli shot 7-for-12 in the win.
Rachel Szydlowski led Carthage with a game-high 19 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Hozzian and Morgan Vukovich also scored in double figures for the Lady Reds with 14 and 10, respectively.
UW-Stevens Point held Morgan Harris, the leading scorer in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW), to just six points on 2-for-12 shooting in the game. Harris entered the game averaging 21.2 points per game.
The Pointers shot 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the field in the game but went 18-of-24 (75.0 percent) from the free-throw line in the win. The Lady Reds shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56) for the afternoon and were 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from behind the arc.
UW-Stevens Point outrebounded Carthage 46-31 in the game and turned 20 offensive rebounds into a 26-7 advantage in second-chance points. Neither team led by more than six points in the game.
The Lady Reds held the largest lead of the contest at 35-29 with 8:02 remaining in the third quarter after a three-pointer by Bailey Gilbert but the Pointers scored the next four points to get right back within two. UWSP's largest lead of the afternoon was five, 23-18, midway through the second quarter.
UW-Stevens Point, which was receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, has a midweek off leading up to a game at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m.
