WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team ran its winning streak to five games with a 58-49 win over Edgewood after fighting off a late comeback bid by the Eagles on Thursday afternoon at JustAGame Fieldhouse.
Box Score UW-Stevens Point (8-2) led 37-23 at halftime and was ahead by as many as 18 in the third quarter before surviving a late rally by Edgewood (2-9). The win kept the Pointers unbeaten (9-0) all-time against the Eagles and gave UWSP its first five-game winning streak since Dec. 30, 2013 to Jan. 11, 2014.

Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) layup gave UW-Stevens Point a 43-25 lead with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter but Edgewood trimmed the lead to 11 heading to the fourth quarter. The Eagles climbed to within three, 49-46, with 5:03 remaining in regulation after a 10-2 run to start the period.
A three-pointer by
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) two minutes later pushed the Pointers' lead to seven and the Eagles got no closer than five the rest of the way. UW-Stevens Point made five of six free throws in a little over a minute down the stretch and Edgewood missed its final four shots from the field.
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points and added six rebounds, two assists and two steals in 21 minutes. The junior was 4-for-5 from the field, including a three-pointer, and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line in her first double-figure scoring game of the season.
Anklam was the only other UWSP player in double figures, scoring 10 points on just five field-goal attempts.
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) added nine points, while
Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) and Gamillo each had seven. Fourteen players played in the game for the Pointers and 10 scored.
The Pointers built a 37-23 halftime lead after shooting 60.0 percent (15-for-25) from the floor before the break. UW-Stevens Point was 6-for-8 from behind the arc in the first half and five different players accounted for the six makes.
UW-Stevens Point led 18-17 with 7:42 remaining in the second quarter before gradually pulling away. A layup by Douglas and a three by Gamillo started a 19-6 finish to the first half for the Pointers, who made eight of their final 14 shots before the break.
Sierra Jiran scored a game-high 15 points for Edgewood on 6-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three-point range. She also added seven boards, two blocks and two steals. Rachel Pope added 11 points, six assists and three steals and played all 40 minutes for the Eagles.
UW-Stevens Point plays its third game in four days at St. Norbert on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. in De Pere.
