MADISON, Wis. – Four players scored in double figures as the No. 19 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team put up a season-high 82 points in an 82-66 non-conference road win over Edgewood on Tuesday evening at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
Box Score Sean McGann (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) and
Zack Goedeke (Valders, WI/Valders) each scored 17 points and
Brett Tauber (Madison, WI/Memorial) recorded his first collegiate double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds for UW-Stevens Point (5-4). The win was UWSP's 10th consecutive victory over Edgewood (1-8) in a series the Pointers now lead 23-3.
UW-Stevens Point led 16-12 a little over six minutes into the game before taking a 30-14 lead behind a 14-2 run. The run spanned 6:36 and was ignited by back-to-back three-pointers by
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, WI/Mount Horeb), who scored all nine of his points in eight first-half minutes.
Edgewood then went on a 10-4 run of its own to get back within 10 with 3:31 left in the opening half but UW-Stevens Point scored the final seven points to take a 41-24 lead at the break. Fredrickson's third three-pointer of the half sent the Pointers into the locker room with a 17-point lead.
In the second half, UW-Stevens Point never led by fewer than 12 points. Edgewood climbed to within 55-43 with 10:24 to play and again with 9:16 on the clock but Goedeke scored the next five points to stretch the Pointers' lead back to 17.
Goedeke scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and McGann had 11 of his 17 after the break. As a team, UW-Stevens Point shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28) in the second half to finish at 48.3 percent (28-for-58) in the game.
Goedeke shot 7-for-10 from the field and made all three of his free throws. McGann was 8-for-9 from the charity stripe and 4-for-10 from the floor.
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, WI/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 10 points, a career-high five steals and four assists.
Sy Staver led Edgewood with 13 points and five assists off the bench, while fellow reserve Tyler Westrick added 10. Bench players accounted for 44 of 66 points for the Eagles, who shot 45.8 percent (22-for-48) from the floor.
UW-Stevens Point outrebounded Edgewood 39-24 in the game and turned that advantage into a 24-8 edge in second-chance points. The Pointers outscored the Eagles 14-2 in second chance points in the first half thanks to a 26-10 advantage on the boards.
The Eagles' only lead of the evening was 3-2 in the opening minute of the game. UW-Stevens Point led for 38:27 in the game, compared to just 31 seconds for Edgewood.
UW-Stevens Point is off to Phoenix, Ariz. for a pair of games next week. The Pointers open the trip against Keene State (6-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. before taking on Hamilton on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. Both games are at the Phoenix Convention Center.
