Balanced attack helps Pointers shoot down Cardinals

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Ten players scored for the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team as the Pointers handed Saint Mary's (Minn.) its first loss of the season 68-44 on Saturday evening at Berg Gym.

UW-Stevens Point (6-2), which trailed for just 44 seconds, shot 52.0 percent from the field in the win and held Saint Mary's (8-1) to 26.8 percent. The teams were meeting for the first time since 1996 in a series the Pointers now lead 5-2 after snapping the Cardinals' eight-game winning streak.

Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) each scored 11 points to lead all scorers in the game. Anklam was 5-for-8 from the field and added four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Hennes was 3-for-6 from behind the arc, grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and tallied three assists and three blocks.

The Pointers led 32-17 at the half before the Cardinals scored the first seven points of the third quarter to get within eight. UW-Stevens Point responded with an 8-0 run of its own, including a three-point play by Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) and a three by Anklam to increase its lead to 16.

UW-Stevens Point led by at least 13 points for the remaining 10:09 of game time. Leading 50-37 with 8:10 remaining in the fourth, the Pointers broke the game wide open with a 14-1 run, scoring on seven consecutive possessions to take a 64-38 lead.

The Pointers held a 30-14 advantage in bench scoring in the game, led by nine points from Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London). Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) added eight points and three assists off the bench. Joann Wolfenberg (Adell, WI/Plymouth Comprehensive) made all four of her field goals to record eight points and five boards.

UW-Stevens Point shot 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from behind the arc, its most made threes since the season opener, and held Saint Mary's to 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from long distance. The Pointers had assists on 16 of their 26 baskets and outscored the Cardinals 30-20 in the paint.

Brigette Audette led the Cardinals with nine points, Micaela Meredith had eight and Brandi Blattner had seven. Saint Mary's entered the game averaging over 76 points per game and had scored over 80 three times.

After a layup by Anklam to open the scoring, Saint Mary's took its only lead of the game behind three points from Blattner but the lead lasted just 44 seconds. The Pointers used a 9-0 run to turn a 16-13 lead into a 25-13 advantage midway through the second quarter on its way to a 15-point halftime lead.

UW-Stevens Point plays a pair of games at a holiday tournament in Wisconsin Dells on Dec. 30-31. The Pointers face Luther on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. before taking on Edgewood the following afternoon at 1 p.m.
