OSHKOSH, Wis. – In its fifth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship final match, the No. 14 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team fell 25-17, 26-24, 25-19 to No. 11 UW-Whitewater on Saturday afternoon at Kolf Sports Center.
Box ScoreUW-Stevens Point (26-8) and UW-Whitewater (31-4) were meeting for the third consecutive time in the WIAC championship match after the Pointers topped the Warhawks to earn the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament bid the last two seasons. The Pointers will find out if they will receive an at-large bid on the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday morning at 10 a.m.
The Wawhawks held the Pointers to an attack percentage of just .019 in the match, the first time UWSP has hit under .100 all season long. UW-Whitewater hit .189 in the match and hit over .220 in each of the final two sets.
Emma Brunkhorst (Germantown, WI/Germantown) led UW-Stevens Point with eight kills and hit .286 in the loss.
Brittany Laffin (Carpentersville, IL/Hampshire) recorded 23 assists, while
Hannah Picel (West Bend, WI/West) and
Bri Piepenbrok (Merrill, WI/Merrill) were in double figures in digs with 17 and 10, respectively.
Lauren Pfeifer was the only player to hit double figures in kills, finishing with 12, while Brittany Langley added nine for UW-Whitewater. Staci Hasley had 34 assists and Brittany Robinson made 18 digs for the Warhawks.
UW-Whitewater used a 6-0 run to take an early 7-2 in the first set. UW-Stevens Point got within 14-13 but the Warhawks pulled away with an 8-2 spurt to lead by seven late.
The Pointers trailed 24-21 at the tail end of the second set but won three straight points to tie it at 24-24. However, the Wawhawks won the final two points to take a two-set lead.
UW-Whitewater got off to another early lead in the third, winning the first four points and never trailed in the set to secure the title.
UW-Stevens Point has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including berths in each of the last four seasons.
