STEVENS POINT, Wis. – For the second game in a row,
Zack Goedeke (Valders, WI/Valders) set a career high in scoring, finishing with 26 points to power the ninth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team to a 66-61 win over St. Norbert on Tuesday night at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.
Box ScoreGoedeke shot 10-for-15 from the field and 6-for-10 from the free-throw line and also pulled down seven rebounds for UW-Stevens Point (3-1). The 26 points surpassed Goedeke's total of 17 against Hope on Saturday night, as the Pointers defeated St. Norbert (1-1) in the first regular-season meeting between the two programs since 1992.
UW-Stevens Point trailed St. Norbert 40-31 with 16:43 remaining in the second half before embarking on a 12-0 run over a stretch of 5:26 to go ahead 43-40. Goedeke had six points during the run and the Pointers forced four turnovers as the Green Knights missed seven consecutive shots over the stretch. The run culminated in UWSP's first lead since 8-7 at the 14:01 mark of the first half.
St. Norbert halted the run and hung around to trail 60-59 with 1:34 left in the game. A layup by Goedeke, a stop and two free throws by
Sean McGann (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) quickly grew the UWSP lead to 64-59 with 28 seconds to go.
After two free throws by Terrence Garner and one free throw by
Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall), UW-Stevens Point led by four, 65-61, with 19 seconds on the clock but the Pointers forced a turnover to close out the win. The Pointers shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) from the field in the second half after shooting 37.5 percent (9-for-24) in the first to finish at an even 50.0 percent (25-for-50).
In addition to Goedeke's career night, McGann recorded 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, WI/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) pitched in with nine, while Pelkofer added eight points and four assists. UW-Stevens Point held a 32-20 advantage in points in the paint, including 24 points down low in the second half, and a 15-4 edge in points off turnovers. The Pointers had just three turnovers in the game.
Ben Bobinski led St. Norbert with 18 points on 5-for-10 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. He also gathered seven rebounds. D.J. DeValk was also in double figures with 14 points.
The Green Knights led for almost the entirety of the first half, as the Pointers' only leads were 4-3 and 8-7. St. Norbert's largest lead of the opening half was 10 after a three-point play by Garner and two Bobinski free throws in the final two minutes of the half.
UW-Stevens Point faces No. 1 Augustana (Ill.) in a rematch of last season's national title game on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in Rock Island, Ill.
