RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Needing a win to clinch a spot in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship, the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team fell 4-1 on the road to UW-River Falls on Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium.
Box Score UW-River Falls (9-7-2, 3-3-1 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point (4-15-0, 2-5-0 WIAC) were scoreless at the break but the Falcons broke open the game in the second half, scoring four times. Maggie Koehler led the way with two goals and an assist for the hosts.
Lizzy Bruder opened the scoring 3:41 into the second half, scoring off a pass from Koehler. Abby Soderholm then doubled UWRF's lead a little over 15 minutes later.
Kayla Huber (Wausau, WI/D.C. Everest) got the Pointers back in the game at the 65:58 mark with her fourth goal of the season. The freshman's goal tied Huber with
Jillian Ross (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) for the team lead.
With UW-Stevens Point needing two more goals, Koehler scored twice in a span of 1:15 as the Falcons pulled away. UW-River Falls held advantages of 23-17 in shots and 11-6 in shots on goal.
Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest) made seven saves in the loss, while Erica Cimochowski stopped five shots to pick up the win.
The loss marked the end of the UWSP careers of Churkey, Ross,
Sarah Meylor (Watertown, WI/Watertown) and
Emily Dietrich (Franklin, WI/Muskego). Ross, Meylor and Dietrich combined for seven of UW-Stevens Point's 16 goals this season, while Churkey finished her career with 338 saves and logged 5,777:52 minutes in net.
