STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Katie Bares scored 5:06 into the first overtime to give Viterbo a 2-1 win over the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team on Senior Day on Friday afternoon at Point Soccer Bowl.
Box Score Bares' goal came after she ran onto a through ball from Maria Michels and then finished over the onrushing
Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest) to give Viterbo (9-7) the win. The V-Hawks outshot UW-Stevens Point (3-14) by a 26-6 margin in the game, although the difference in shots on goal was 10-3.
Trailing 1-0 late on, the Pointers sent the game to overtime when
Jillian Ross (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) scored her third of the season to tie it at 1-1 at 83:17. From near the end line, Ross lifted a shot over Ashley Hicks that went in off the far post.
Earlier, Viterbo opened the scoring when Cait Michicich found the lower-left corner from the top of the six-yard box with 2:50 left in the first half. Michicich also had two shots in the post in the game.
Prior to the Ross' equalizer, the Pointers had a great chance to tie the game but Hicks reacted quickly to tip a close-range shot by
Emily Dietrich (Franklin, WI/Muskego) over the bar.
Viterbo held a 12-2 advantage in corners in the game but were unable to convert any of those opportunities into goals.
Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest) made eight saves for the Pointers in the loss.
Alicia Seachord played the first half before giving way to Hicks, but returned for overtime to pick up the win. Both V-Hawk goalkeepers made one save in the game.
The game was the final home game in the careers of Churkey, Ross, Dietrich and
Sarah Meylor (Watertown, WI/Watertown) at the Point Soccer Bowl. The Pointers play at conference-leading UW-La Crosse (12-4, 5-0 WIAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
