Volleyball opens UW-Oshkosh Invitational with sweep of Martin Luther

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team hit .292 to record a 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 win over Martin Luther College on the first day of the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Friday evening at Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Stevens Point (19-6) hit .310 and .360 in the first two sets and .229 in the third, while the Pointers' defense held Martin Luther (4-20) to an attack percentage of just .012 for the match. The sweep was UWSP's 14th in their 19 wins this season.
 
Gabby Thomas (Henderson, MN/LeSueur-Henderson) finished one dig shy of a double-double, tallying 11 kills and nine digs. The senior hit .450 in the match and recorded her 10th double-digit kill performance of the season.
 
Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) extended her double-digit kill streak to 12 consecutive matches by registering 10 kills. Maddie Courter (Geneva, IL/Geneva), Ellen Drewry (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) and Bella Nelson (Luck, WI/Luck) each contributed five kills for UW-Stevens Point.
 
Brittany Laffin (Carpentersville, IL/Hampshire) handed out 32 assists in the victory. Hannah Picel (West Bend, WI/West) made a match-best 11 digs and had three of UW-Stevens Point's six aces. Thomas also added a pair of aces.
 
Rylee Weisensel led Martin Luther with six kills and four block assists, Laura Schoenherr had 10 assists and Emily Neeb made 10 digs.
 
UW-Stevens Point is back in action on day two of the tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Pointers open the day against St. Thomas (7-13) at 10 a.m. before taking on No. 8 Colorado College (24-1) at noon.
