CLAREMONT, Cal. – The No. 20-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team never trailed and recorded a season-high 20 assists on 23 baskets in a 57-49 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Monday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Box Score UW-Stevens Point (8-3) got off to a quick 8-2 start and led wire-to-wire except for a 22-second stretch in the first half when the score was tied at 14-14. The Pointers held Pomona-Pitzer (2-6) to 38.3 percent shooting in just the second-ever meeting between the two schools. UWSP also defeated the Sagehens in 1987.
Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) led the Pointers with 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc.
Alex Richard (Spring Green, WI/River Valley) added 14 points on 6-or-8 shooting in his ninth double-figure scoring performance in 11 games this season. UW-Stevens Point shot 47.9 percent from the field in the game but was just 6-for-15 from the free-throw line.
Jordan Lutz (Amherst, WI/Amherst) chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and had five of UWSP's 12 steals, while
Sean McGann (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) came off the bench to provide nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Five players had at least three assists for UW-Stevens Point.
Pelkofer helped UW-Stevens Point get out to the 8-2 lead three and a half minutes into the game with a pair of early threes. Later, his layup stretched the UWSP advantage to 12-4 before a 10-2 run by the Sagehens evened the score at 14-14.
With the score tied, McGann keyed a 7-0 run for the Pointers with a three-point basket and a layup but the Sagehens hung around as UW-Stevens Point led 26-20 at the half. UWSP committed just one turnover in the opening half and forced 10 on the defensive end.
Midway through the second half, Pomona-Pitzer made three-straight shots to close to within three at 37-34 with 11:42 remaining. UW-Stevens Point came right back with back-to-back layups by Richard to re-establish a seven-point edge.
The Pointers led by at least six the rest of the way. The largest lead of the evening for UWSP was 14 with 1:32 left before the Sagehens hit two threes in the final 31 seconds.
Kyle McAndrews scored a game-high 18 points and shot 7-for-16 from the field for Pomona-Pitzer, while Hunter Lowry had 10 points. The Sagehens outrebounded the Pointers 35-28 in the game but were plagued by 16 turnovers.
UW-Stevens Point plays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday, Dec. 31 to close out its West Coast trip. The Pointers and Stags will tip-off at 4 p.m. PT.
